SONIC JELLO

Sonic Jello is a sound-activated sculpture that makes Jell-O wiggle. Sonic Jello vibrating sculpture is made up of a square wooden frame with a floating platform suspended on two bungee cords. A vibrating motor is attached to the underside of the platform, with wires connecting to an Arduino microprocessor and microphone.  The microphone responds to audio input (voice, music) which triggers the vibrating motor to move and make the Jell-O, wiggle. This is a new direction for my artwork and is the first time I have used food and tech together. I’m fascinated by this invention and the experimental nature of the piece.  I’ve been interacting with this artwork in multiple ways and anticipate a future date where I can observe live interactions between users and the artwork.

Special thanks to David Ross, Chair of the MFA Art Practice program at the School of Visual Arts, for planting the seeds of inspiration to pursue this idea. Special thanks to Joe Paradiso, MIT Professor, Associate Academic Head, Media Arts and Sciences, for guidance and assistance on initial research questions and directives. Special thanks to Jeremy Savage, Broadcast Engineer, Sirius XM, for technical support, fabrication and experimentation throughout this project.
